Glenturret
Glenturret is more than just a name in the world of single malt whisky, it’s a symbol of Scottish heritage, craftsmanship, and character. As the oldest working distillery in Scotland, Glenturret produces Highland whiskies with care, precision, and deep respect for tradition.
Whether you’re drawn to rich sherry notes, gentle spices or a subtle touch of peat, Glenturret whisky offers a tasting experience that blends depth with refinement. At Wealthy Whisky Society, we bring you closer to this remarkable whisky, each bottle telling its own story.
The history of Glenturret
Widely regarded as the oldest operating distillery in Scotland, Glenturret’s story officially began in 1763, though illicit distilling is believed to have taken place at the same site in Perthshire as early as 1717. Its secluded valley setting and abundant, pure water made it an ideal location for whisky-making.
Throughout the centuries, the distillery changed hands several times and survived difficult periods, including Prohibition and the global economic downturn. In 1957, James Fairlie revived the distillery, maintaining traditional production techniques. Since 2018, Glenturret has been owned by the French luxury group Lalique, who honour the artisanal roots while steering the brand toward exclusivity and finesse. This blend of heritage and innovation makes Glenturret a unique name in the world of single malts.
The Glenturret whisky production process
Producing Glenturret whisky is a craft-driven process focused entirely on quality and authenticity. It all starts with mineral-rich spring water from nearby Loch Turret – ideal for whisky production. Barley is traditionally malted and fermented in rare Douglas fir wooden washbacks.
Distillation takes place slowly and meticulously in traditional copper pot stills. Only the heart of the second distillation, the purest cut, is used, resulting in a smooth, refined spirit with excellent ageing potential.
Glenturret matures its whiskies in a combination of American oak bourbon casks and European oak sherry casks. This careful cask selection produces a wide flavour spectrum, from soft and fruity to rich and spicy. Bottling is typically done at lower strengths for a subtle and approachable taste experience.
Flavour profile
Glenturret whiskies are known for their smooth, balanced character. Instead of bold extremes, you’ll find harmony: a gentle mix of sweetness, spice, and oak. Depending on the cask type and ageing process, you might notice fruity notes, a touch of vanilla, or a hint of smoke.
What all Glenturret expressions share is a refined style and well-considered flavour structure. This is not a whisky to rush, it’s one to savour and explore.
