Rosebank

In the world of Scotch whisky, Rosebank is a name of great renown. This iconic Lowland distillery, once among the most respected in Scotland, is celebrated for its elegant, floral character and triple distillation. After years of silence, Rosebank whisky has made a remarkable comeback. For enthusiasts of refined, historic single malts, this is a rediscovery not to be missed.

The rich history of Rosebank

The story of Rosebank begins in the 18th century, though the distillery as we know it was officially founded in 1840 in the Scottish town of Falkirk, alongside the Forth and Clyde Canal. Rosebank quickly earned a reputation as a beloved Lowland malt, praised for its light and floral style. Whisky icons such as Michael Jackson and Jim Murray described Rosebank as “the queen of the Lowlands.”

Sadly, the distillery closed its doors in 1993, mainly due to the high cost of necessary environmental upgrades. Yet for decades, the Rosebank name lived on through a small number of rare bottlings, highly sought after by collectors.

Rosebank whisky flavour profile

What sets Rosebank whisky apart is its delicate and layered flavour profile. Unlike the more heavily peated Highland or Islay whiskies, Rosebank is light and elegant, offering fresh floral aromas, gentle citrus notes, honey, and subtle spice. This refined character is largely thanks to its triple distillation. This technique is rare in Scotland, but typical of the Lowland style.

The result is a silky-smooth whisky with refined complexity, perfect for those who appreciate balance and subtlety in the glass. Rosebank whisky is exceptional when enjoyed neat, but also pairs beautifully with a fine meal or as a special end to the evening.

A new chapter for Rosebank

In 2017, whisky lovers received exciting news: Ian Macleod Distillers announced plans to revive Rosebank. Restoration of the original buildings began, alongside the reinstallation of traditional copper stills. In 2023, the first spirit flowed once more, and in 2024 the distillery officially reopened its doors.

This revival is far from a marketing ploy—it is a heartfelt tribute to Scottish craftsmanship and heritage. Every detail, from the water source to the shape of the stills, has been faithfully restored to reflect Rosebank’s original style.
