Extremely peated

Mark Reynier, owner of the Bruichladdich distillery, had one goal with Octomore whisky: to see how far peat could go in whisky. See the result here, the most heavily peated whisky in the world. Bruichladdich decided to raise the bar and increase the peat content in the malt to an incredible 167 ppm. A new standard has been set. Octomore currently accounts for approximately 12% of Bruichladdich’s annual whisky production. Octomore has matured in warehouse no. 5. There is no doubt that demand will be much higher than bottled. There are only 18,000 numbered bottles at cask strength (61%) available worldwide. The whisky has matured in the classic bourbon barrels for Bruichladdich. The grain comes from only one farm and is not mixed. Octomore is a farm close to the Bruichladdich distillery and this whisky is named after it. It now serves as a holiday home. There is no doubt that demand will be much higher than bottled.

Tasting note

This whisky is intense. Peat, peat and more peat. Peat smoke is the first to enter the nose. To be honest, with this whisky you have to do your best to discover more. If you take the time you will also notice leather and tobacco. A swampy smell with saltiness. Then comes some freshness in the form of mint and fresh oak. Give the glass plenty of time. Eventually there will be balance in the peat.

The peat smoke is also the first to emerge in the taste. A continuation of oak with raisin notes. Subtly followed by pear syrup, apricot and candied fruits and citrus.
The finish is long and intense. Heavy peat is tamed by sweet oak and wine influences. A dram for anyone who likes a challenge. Complex and intense but definitely worth trying.
