Cask Information
The journey of The Dalmore 40 Year Old begins deep in the Highlands, where the spirit first encountered the wood decades ago. Its foundation was laid in American white oak casks, allowing the whisky to rest for years in a gentle embrace of vanilla and creamy toffee. However, the true alchemy of this 2024 edition lies in the bold “split” that followed.
One portion of the precious liquid was transferred to legendary 30-year-old Matusalem Oloroso Sherry casks from the Spanish bodega González Byass. Here, the whisky absorbed the soul of antique oak and the deep, nutty sweetness of dried fruits. Simultaneously, the other portion matured in rare Port Colheita pipes from the iconic year 1970, enriching the spirit with complex layers of black cherries and dark chocolate.
In the final chapter of this forty-year epic, these two distinct paths converged once more. In a meticulously crafted “marriage,” the sherry and port characters melded seamlessly before receiving a refined final flourish in first-fill bourbon casks. The result is a masterpiece of patience and craftsmanship, captured in crystal, where every sip tells the story of forty years of history and the perfect harmony between three distinct types of wood.

The Dalmore 40 Year Old (2024 Edition) is far more than a spirit, it is a pinnacle of Highland single malt artistry, representing four decades of meticulous maturation. As a centerpiece of The Dalmore’s prestigious collection, this annual release is a testament to the distillery’s “cask curation” philosophy, spearheaded by the legendary Master Distiller Richard Paterson OBE and Master Maker Gregg Glass.
The defining characteristic of this 2024 edition is its extraordinary cask journey. The whisky began its life in American white oak ex-bourbon barrels, which provided the structural foundation for its long sleep. However, its complexity is derived from a sophisticated finishing process. The liquid was split between two of the world’s most sought-after wood types: 30-year-old Matusalem Oloroso Sherry casks from the renowned Bodega González Byass and exceptionally rare 1970 Graham’s Port Colheita pipes. These components were eventually reunited and harmonized in first-fill bourbon casks to create a seamless, multi-layered masterpiece.
The presentation is as exceptional as the liquid itself. Each bottle is a hand-blown Baccarat crystal decanter, a material chosen to reflect the clarity and prestige of the 40-year-old spirit. Adorning the front is the iconic 12-pointed silver Royal Stag, the historic emblem of the Mackenzie clan who once owned the distillery. With its ABV of 42% and a strictly limited global allocation, this edition is highly coveted by collectors and connoisseurs alike, serving as a liquid heirloom that captures the passage of time and the peak of Scotch whisky craftsmanship.

Tasting Note
Nose:
Upon pouring, the whisky releases an aristocratic bouquet dominated by caramelized orange peel and honeyed figs. As it breathes, deeper layers of polished mahogany and warm toffee emerge, reminiscent of the refined atmosphere of a stately, antique library.
Palate:
The palate is opulent and syrupy, led by a rich combination of chocolate truffles and bittersweet English marmalade. The Port cask influence shines through beautifully with notes of poached plums and black cherries, perfectly balanced by the savory depth of crushed walnuts.
Finish:
The finish is epic and lingers for minutes, as the initial sweetness transitions into an elegant dryness of dark chocolate and freshly roasted espresso. It concludes with echoes of Black Forest cake and refined wood spices a masterful finale worthy of a forty-year-old spirit.
