In the 19th century there were about fifty distilleries operating on the Isle of Arran, most of which were even illegal distilleries. In this Smugglers’ Series Vol. 1 ‘The Illicit Stills’ pays Arran their first tribute to this island’s gritty smuggling past. The popular series refers to the illegal distilling of whisky in the 18th and 19th centuries.
It is a remarkably robust Arran with a more powerful peat influence than usual, reminiscent of the whisky that was distilled on the island in earlier times. The use of bourbon barrels provides an answer to the peat and provides sweet and fruity influences. This new series is all about the illegal history of the island. In addition, this first part has appeared in a beautifully designed packaging in the form of a hollowed-out book. This is to continue to underline the importance of Arran’s independence.

Tasting note
The first part of the series is bottled at 55.4% Vol. The nose has subtle aromas of peat, light floral notes and oily influences of the sea. In the distance you smell a campfire.
You taste juicy plums with pepper, pine wood and light smoke. Then come white grapes and vanilla wafers. You will also find ginger and herbs.
The finish is long and dried fruit. This is expanded with maritime accents, salty and finally a dying wood fire.
