January 2010, a thick layer of snow covered the roofs of the warehouses of the Glenfiddich Distillery after weeks of heavy snowfall and extremely low temperatures. Several hundred barrels of whisky were maturing in the warehouses when, on January 7, in the most remote part of the distillery, several of the roofs of these warehouses collapsed under the weight of the snow. As a result, the maturing whisky in the oak barrels was exposed to temperatures of 19 degrees below zero. All distillery staff sprang into action and worked continuously to clear the snow and keep damage to a minimum. Brian Kinsman, the Malt Master of the Glenfiddich Distillery, said: “Standing between the rubble and the barrels, we assessed the situation as to what our next steps should be. My first thoughts went to the casks, some of which were very old and contained beautiful whisky, then the idea came to me that these casks would make a fantastic single malt.”
Glenfiddich Snow Phoenix Limited Edition 2010 was born. The Glenfiddich Snow Phoenix was created with barrels sourced directly from the affected warehouses. Bottled at cask strength of 47.6%. Non-chillfiltered and of different ages and finishes (including American oak and oloroso sherry). All whiskies are ‘married’ for a short time on so-called ‘marrying tuns’. The result is a single malt with a beautiful golden color with some accents of light copper. After working so relentlessly in the bitter cold, the people of Glenfiddich Distillery have come to appreciate the people who volunteer each winter to save people and animals in these harsh winter conditions. Therefore, from the sale of every bottle of Snow Phoenix, a special contribution is made to the funds of the Cairngorm Mountain Resque Team to ensure they can continue their fantastic work in the beautiful area of the Cairngorm Hills in Speyside.

Tasting note
The result is a single malt with a beautiful golden color with some accents of light copper. The nose consists of creamy vanilla complemented by lively notes of apple and pear and a light scent of fresh blossoms. The taste evokes memories of apples roasted in a smoldering campfire, sweetened with floral honey and accompanied by a piece of chocolate. Rich and complex with a touch of burnt sugar, coffee and wood smoke. The whiskey has an exceptionally long finish. Severe sherry notes transition into a delicious soothing sweetness.
