The Port Charlotte distillery is located in the beautiful town of the same name: Port Charlotte, on the island of Islay. The distillery was built in 1829 by Colin Campbell and was also known as Lochindaal. After several acquisitions, the distillery was closed in 1929. Fortunately, the buildings remained intact and served as a garage and also as a youth hostel. The warehouses in the hills behind the distillery have been used by the Bruichladdich distillery for years. Port Charlotte has been distilled at Bruichladdich Distillery since 2001. This Port Charlotte malt whisky is the heavily peated variety of Bruichladdich and matures in the original, cool and sealed warehouses of the old Port Charlotte distillery.
The seventh edition of cask strength Port Charlotte is actually exclusive for the Travel Retail Market. We were able to get a few number of bottles. This PC 11 is, as the name suggests, eleven years old. The subtitle reads “Eòrna Na h-Alba”, Celtic for Scottish Barley. The peat content is 40 ppm. The whisky is bottled un-chill filtered and uncoloured at a cask strength of 59.5%. A beautiful expression of the connection between spirit, oak and the salty air.

Tasting note
Rich, sweet notes of sherry first appear on the nose, combined with dry peat smoke. Subsequently you will find aromas of dates, dried plums and raisins. Next come hints of cinnamon bark, licorice, juniper and mint. Finally, the fruity notes follow, lime, apple, pear, apricot and banana, all in combination with aromas of honey and sweet malt. This whisky gives an explosion of scents.
The taste is seductive and filmy in the mouth. Mature notes of Sherry maturation such as toasted walnuts, crème brûlée, raisins and dried fruit combine beautifully with notes of oak, tapioca and smoky peat.
The finish is long and pleasant. Smoky tones predominate here. The surprise is a light caramel.
