The Fettercairn 46 Year Old is an extremely rare single malt drawn from a small selection of refill casks that have matured for nearly half a century in the distillery’s traditional dunnage warehouses. The whisky is believed to have been initially filled into American oak ex-bourbon barrels, with a long secondary maturation that includes a portion of European oak influence, contributing to its subtle dried fruit richness and vinous depth.

Over such an extended maturation period, the casks have played a delicate but decisive role: rather than dominating the spirit, they have gradually polished it, allowing oxidation, slow wood extraction, and evaporation to concentrate complexity while preserving Fettercairn’s signature tropical DNA. The result is a whisky where the oak is fully integrated, soft, refined, and deeply expressive rather than overtly woody or tannic.

Distilled in the mid-1970s and bottled at natural cask strength, it is non-chill filtered and presented without artificial colouring, ensuring complete authenticity.

Nose:
Incredibly complex and mature, opening with a wave of overripe tropical fruit and dark orchard notes. Banana, dried mango, and baked pineapple intertwine with plum, fig, and orange zest. Layers of toasted sourdough, honeyed oak, and subtle dark chocolate emerge, alongside refined spice and a gentle vinous depth from the port influence.

Palate:
Rich, opulent, and perfectly integrated. Spiced pear, caramelised orange, and stewed tropical fruits lead the way, followed by espresso, liquorice, and black cherry compote. Beneath the fruit richness lies polished oak, cocoa, and warming baking spices, all carried by an elegant, silky texture that reflects its extraordinary age.

Finish:
Exceptionally long and evolving. Dark fruits, treacle, and chocolate linger alongside dried plum, demerara sugar, and gentle oak tannins. The final impression is one of balance and restraint—remarkably vibrant for its age, yet deeply composed and refined.
