The Glen Garioch 16 years old Renaissance 2nd Chapter is the successor to the first Renaissance release from 2014. This 16-year successor to the 15 years old is, just like the first release, also made from whiskey distilled directly after the distillery reopened in 1997.
Glen Garioch was closed between 1995 and 1997 and peated whisky was produced before that. After the reopening, however, the peat has disappeared and generally gives way to more sherry maturations.
Given the age, this is a combination of barrels from the period ’97 – ’00. A combination of bourbon and sherry casks where the color clearly shows that the latter had a very clear influence.

In direct comparison, this one is less present and intense on the nose than its 15-year predecessor, the “1st Chapter”.
It also appears to have a higher percentage of ex-bourbon barrels in the cask and therefore appears drier and more “dusty”, with prominent vanilla and dried grass/hay/straw flavors. There are also more sour fruits popping up than in the younger version – especially unripe pears.
A hint of peat smoke (from the barnyard aroma variety) emerges in this bottling, although the newer Gariochs should all be unpeated. After the first sips, an unexpected floral side emerges. The flavors that immediately come to mind are orange zest, warm oak spices, honeycomb, toffee, cream, lime and ginger with vanilla ice cream. Finished with orange marmalade, spiced apple pie, toasted almonds and nectarines.
