The Glen Garioch Distillery is located in Aberdeenshire on the outskirts of Old Meldrum, northwest of Aberdeen. Glen Garioch comes from Old Scots, Glen means “valley” and Garioch is the name of the area. Translated, this is “Valley of Garioch”.
The distillery was founded in 1798 by a certain Thomas Simpson. Some 30 years later the distillery was sold to Ingram, Lamb & Co. who owned the distillery between 1827 and 1834. After several acquisitions, Glen Garioch was bought in 1970 by Stanley P. Morrison Ltd. who wanted to have a representative distillery in every whisky region in Scotland.
Three years after the takeover, the distillery was thoroughly renovated, including the addition of a still. In 1982 the stills were converted and fired with gas.
The name of the distillery has been changed several times. From Stanley P. Morrison Ltd to Morrison Bowmore Distillers Ltd. And from 1994 it became 100% part of the Japanese distiller Suntory Ltd. In 1996 it was decided to close and sell Glen Garioch. Sales failed and demand for malt increased again, so that the distillery reopened in 1997 and the Glen Garioch malt is available again internationally.
Both bourbon and sherry casks and refill casks are used for the maturation of the malt. Until the closure in 1996, malt was produced on its own malt floors. The green malt was dried for four hours with peat cut nearby on the Pitligo Moss, then the malt was post-dried with grass. The brewing water, as well as the cooling water for the condensers, comes from the springs and streams of nearby Percock Hill. The Garioch Valley is very fertile and the ideal place for a distillery with a rich supply of barley.
Glen Garioch 15 years 1999 The Renaissance is a special 1st edition of a series of four.

Tasting note
This whisky smells like Dulce de leche and a blue cheese, just like the regular 12 year old!
Earthy notes such as soy sauce, straw and coffee are nicely balanced with fruity notes such as apple syrup and red currants.
In the mouth this whisky is full and creamy with milk chocolate and a strange feeling of fried onions, apricots, citrus fruits, vanilla biscuits and a slightly bitter spiciness.
The finish begins with juicy citrus fruits with clear oak and spicy notes. The sauteed onion from the palate and the soy sauce from the nose reappear and a slight smokiness lingers.
The whisky has a unique Highland house style of honey, heather and a light spiciness.
