The Glenglassaugh Distillery has had a turbulent history, opening and closing no less than 7 times in 125 years. Glenglassaugh Distillery, on the eastern side of beautiful Sandend Bay, was founded in 1875 by Colonel James Moir. He ran the distillery with his two cousins until 1892 when Glenglassaugh was bought by Highland Distillers. After a complete rebuild in 1960, the distillery continued to produce whisky until 1986, when it was mothballed.
Always popular with blenders, single malt releases were limited for most of its highly irregular lifespan. Currently owned by the BenRiach Distillery Company, who purchased the distillery in 2013, the distillery’s focus is now firmly on the single malt market. Glenglassaugh is produced using the highest quality Scottish barley and traditional distillation methods, where quality is key. Glenglassaugh continues to be handcrafted by a small, highly skilled team dedicated to creating products of the highest quality. Only the best casks are selected to slowly mature the precious spirit until it is ready. A small distillery that takes the time for quality and craft.
This Glenglassaugh Rare Cask Release – Batch 2 from 1973 is extremely rare and from the time when blended whisky was mainly produced. It was at Glenglassaugh in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s that the whiskies were produced that have won awards and international recognition in recent years and are sought after by whisky connoisseurs and collectors alike. This release is a wonderful example of that and fortunately it has not been used for blending. A beautiful piece of history with a real vintage single malt whisky as a trophy.

Tasting note
A 41 year old Grande Dame with a rum cask finish. The nose is soft and subtle. You smell summer fruit that transitions to ripe banana and cinnamon. Wonderfully creamy.
The taste is syrupy and with notes of toffee. Then the dark chocolate that comes out of a fountain. This in combination with Mediterranean fruit. The finish is long and smooth with brown sugar and even some grains lingering. An absolute taste cannon with the Caribbean in your glass.
