The origins of whisky from Japan date back to the early 20th century, when pioneers like Shinjiro Torii and Masataka Taketsuru combined their passion for Scotch whisky with Japanese craft. Taketsuru studied distillation and maturation techniques in Scotland and brought this knowledge back to Japan. In 1923, the first Japanese distillery was founded: Yamazaki.
Initially, Japanese whiskies were heavily inspired by the Scottish style, but soon they developed a distinct character of their own.
