Belgian whisky
Belgium is known worldwide for its rich beer culture and gastronomic traditions. However, in recent decades, the country has also made its mark on the whisky world. Belgian distilleries combine traditional techniques with innovative approaches, which has led to a unique and growing whisky production.
History and development
Although Belgium does not have a centuries-old whisky tradition like Scotland or Ireland, whisky production in the country has increased significantly in recent years. Distilleries such as De Molenberg and Duvel have laid the foundation for a new generation of Belgian whisky producers. These distilleries combine local ingredients with craftsmanship, resulting in whiskies that are gaining recognition in both nationally and internationally.

Belgian distilleries
There are several distilleries in Belgium. At Wealthy Whisky Society, we sell several Belgian whiskies from two Belgian distilleries: De Molenberg and Duvel.
De Molenberg
Located in Blaasveld, De Molenberg distillery has a rich history dating back to 1637, when the Van Breedam family milled grain and distilled gin here. In 1872, Louis Van Breedam left the distillery and took over the Mechelen brewery Het Anker, starting a new family tradition. In 2010, the distillery was revived for the production of Belgian whisky, distilling the mash of Golden Carolus beer into single malt whisky. The distillery is particularly known for producing Golden Carolus Single Malt whisky. The combination of brewing techniques with whisky production creates a unique taste experience.
Duvel
Duvel, known for its iconic Belgian beer, has extended its craft to whisky with Duvel Distilled. In 2006, the brewery began distilling Duvel beer, resulting in an exclusive Belgian whisky aged in bourbon and sherry casks. The first edition was released in 2013 and immediately became a sought-after collector’s item. Limited editions followed in later years, including a 10-year aged version and a special anniversary edition. The Belgian whisky retains subtle characteristics of Duvel beer and has a rich, complex flavour that is appreciated by both whisky and beer lovers.
Unique characteristics of Belgian whisky
Belgian whisky is distinguished by the use of local ingredients and the influence of the country’s rich beer culture. Many distilleries evolved from breweries, which has led to a unique cross-pollination between beer and whisky production. Belgian distilleries often use locally grown barley and other raw materials, which contributes to the unique flavour profiles of their whiskies.
In addition, Belgium’s beer culture, recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage, plays a major role in the development of Belgian whisky. Breweries expanding into whisky production bring their expertise and traditions, leading to innovative and distinctive whiskies.
This results in a wide range of flavour profiles, from light, fruity notes to rich and complex aromas, and makes Belgian whisky attractive to both connoisseurs and newcomers looking for authentic and distinctive Belgian whiskies.
