The Fettercairn 50 Year Old is an extraordinary single malt drawn from spirit distilled on 11 June 1966 and matured for five decades in a carefully selected American white oak ex-bourbon cask, before receiving a final finishing period in a single Tawny Port pipe (Cask No. 1). This dual-cask maturation approach combines long-term oxidative ageing in refill bourbon wood with a final layer of fortified wine influence, adding depth, colour, and complexity without overwhelming the underlying distillate.
Over such an extreme maturation period, the cask influence shifts from active extraction to gentle refinement. The bourbon wood provides structure, vanilla sweetness, and tropical fruit development, while the port finish contributes darker fruit tones such as berries, plum, and blackcurrant, along with a subtle wine-like richness. The result is a whisky that remains surprisingly vibrant despite its age, with Fettercairn’s signature tropical style still clearly present.

This release was introduced in 2018 as part of Fettercairn’s revived aged range and represents one of the oldest official bottlings from the distillery. Distilled in 1966 and bottled at 47.9% ABV, it is non-chill filtered and natural in colour. Only a very limited number of bottles were produced, making it an ultra-rare collector’s item positioned at the very top end of Highland single malt whisky.
The style reflects both time and restraint: rather than becoming overly woody or tired, the whisky retains remarkable freshness, combining decades of maturation with lifted tropical fruit, soft spice, toffee sweetness, and elegant oak integration.

Tasting note
Nose:
Rich and complex with layers of blackcurrant, overripe tropical fruit, and dried berries. Notes of vanilla, toffee, and honeyed oak sit alongside plum, cherry, orange peel, and soft baking spices. A subtle roasted coffee and cocoa edge adds depth without losing freshness.
Palate:
Silky and surprisingly vibrant for its age. Blackcurrant, nectarine, and tropical fruit lead into toffee, vanilla cream, and spiced pear. The port influence adds richness with stewed red fruits and dark berry compote, balanced by polished oak and gentle spice.
Finish:
Exceptionally long and evolving. Dark fruits, caramelised sugar, and soft oak tannins fade into ginger, nutmeg, and a lingering fruity freshness of nectarine and citrus peel.
