It is the rare batch of the well-known and now very expensive 18-year-old ‘sherry’. It is actually not purely 1996, as it says ‘1996 and earlier years’. This edition, with its shiny purple box, is one of the last where the distillery still indicates an age. The 18-year-old Macallan Sherry Oak Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky is part of the series that gave Macallan its almost legendary reputation: the pure sherry cask bottlings. Macallan has chosen to indicate little or no age in the current bottlings . This makes this edition even more interesting. We also see this in the significant price increases. Inspired by the Rare Cask series, Macallan then changed the design of the bottle in April 2018, presenting the signature V-shaped notch incorporated into the glass at the transition to the bottle neck with optimized filling and anti-counterfeiting protection combined with a embossed box with high quality design. This edition is still one of the vintage copies from before that time.
In particular, the versions in the old design are almost impossible to find nowadays and fetch exorbitant prices at auctions and from collectors. A true Macallan classic.

Tasting note
The nose is pleasant. Dried fruit, citrus and vanilla. A hint of cinnamon follows. Also glazed chestnuts, honey sauce, hints of fennel or dill, dried porcini mushrooms, cigars, toasted brioche and yes, raisins. The taste fits in with the palette of the previous releases. Just like in the nose rich dried fruit, cloves and toffee. Raisin-filled chocolate, praline, butterscotch. The finish is nice and long. Spicy in the mouth and with a lot of toffee. At the end a touch of smoke from fresh wood.
