Arran

Scotland is known worldwide for its whiskies, and Arran whisky is no exception. Produced on the Isle of Arran, amidst rugged landscapes and an unspoilt coastline, Arran whisky has quickly established itself as a favourite among whisky connoisseurs, thanks to its perfect balance of tradition and innovation. With different types of whiskies, from fruity and light varieties to more complex and richer whiskies, Arran offers a unique experience for every whisky lover.

The history of Arran whisky

The Arran Distillery, founded in 1995 in Lochranza on the Isle of Arran, has quickly made a name for itself in the whisky world. Arran, once known for its illegal distelleries, had no official whisky production for a long time. The choice of location was deliberate: the island provides pure spring water, a maritime climate, and diverse landscapes, all ideal for whisky production.

Under the leadership of Harold Currie, former director of Chivas Regal, Arran grew into a premium single malt brand. His vision of combining tradition with innovation quickly paid off. Arran whiskies are known for their light, fruity character, influenced by the island’s climate.

To increase production capacity and expand the range, Lagg Distillery was opened, specialising in peated whiskies. This has allowed the brand to continue growing, offering both lovers of light, fruity whiskies and fans of smoky expressions a versatile selection.

The production process of Arran whisky

The production process of Arran whisky is all about tradition and quality. It starts with pure spring water from Loch na Davie, which is low in minerals and contributes to the whisky’s smooth flavour. Only the finest Scottish barley is used, with no additives or artificial colourings.

Distillation takes place in small copper pot stills, slowly and carefully, giving the whisky refinement and complexity. The whisky is then matured in oak casks from both America and Europe. Due to the distillery’s coastal location, the maturation process is influenced by the maritime climate, adding a subtle saltiness to the whisky.

A distinctive feature of Arran whisky is that it is non-chill filtered. This means no cold filtration is applied to clarify the whisky, allowing it to retain its natural oils and full flavour. Thanks to these meticulous production methods, Arran sets itself from other whisky brands. The combination of pure water, high-quality barley, traditional distillation, and carefully considered maturation results in a well-balanced whisky with character.

The flavour profiles of Arran whisky

Arran whisky is known for its accessible and complex flavour profiles, where fruity, spicy, and maritime notes come together. Due to the use of unpeated malt, the whisky features fresh hints of apple, pear, and citrus, complemented by hints of honey and vanilla.

For those who prefer a richer taste, Arran whisky offers notes of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves, particularly in whiskies aged in sherry casks. This also adds layers of dried fruit, caramel, and dark chocolate, creating a deep and multi-dimensional experience. The proximity to the sea imparts a subtle saltiness to Arran whisky.

Why Arran is a must-have for Whisky lovers

Arran whisky offers a perfect balance between tradition and innovation. With pure spring water, Scottish barley, and carefully selected casks, the brand delivers an authentic whisky experience. Thanks to non-chill filtration, Arran retains its full flavour and creamy texture. Its diverse range spans from light and fruity whiskies to rich and spicy whiskies, ensuring there is a perfect option for every whisky lover. Crafted with artisanal care and natural ingredients, Arran whisky is of exceptional quality and a valuable addition to any whisky collection.
